The Journey Begins

I'm turning 50 this year, in July to be precise. So are many of my closest friends and high school classmates.

Many people dread that number, just as they did turning 30, or the even more monumental big 4-0. To many, 50 represents the half-way mark and the inevitable downward decline. Strangely, I’ve been looking forward to it for quite some time now, for various reasons.

One, my oldest son will be starting college. He hasn’t made his final decision yet, but his school won’t be far away, somewhere here in the metro NY area. He’ll live on campus and learn to adjust to life with a roommate and begin the path towards becoming a more independent adult.

I know that I will miss him terribly, not seeing him on a daily basis. While I’m not naive enough to believe that my sons tell me everything, we do share a very open and close-knit relationship, something I’m very proud of. However, it’s time for him to make new friendships and bonds away from home.

That leaves me and my youngest back at the house, and one less hectic daily schedule to work around. His current health issues aside, he’s a pretty self-sufficient and trustworthy kid, so I know that I will have some vastly increased level of freedom to pursue work, replenishing the coffers (which are severely depleted), continue on my blogging journey and maybe branch out towards a new career path.

I have many short term goals for this coming year and many long term ones for the decade ahead. The short term ones are more personal oriented - silly, somewhat vain things that could vaguely resemble a mid-life crisis to some - several more piercings, a monumental back tattoo and purple hair to ring in my birthday, among others. All have been in the planning stages for months, if not years, so I know they are not just spontaneous, knee-jerk reactions to Father Time. Maybe a middle finger, I’m not sure.

Others will take a bit more time (not sharing everything just yet!). Hopefully, some of these will involve collabs between various businesses/brands and my blog so together we can document the journey for both me and for you.

Some of you have already reached 50, whether just a few months ago or maybe even a few years ago. I’m going to reach out to a few of you (though I’d be happy to receive any feedback or comments here!) to gain some insight into your thoughts on crossing that magic threshold. Happy, panicked, depressed, indifferent? I’m curious to know. It would be great for us to share those experiences together.

As Mr. Bowie himself said to us about those Golden Years, “Dont’ let me hear you say, life’s taking you nowhere.”
